The Republic of Zambia Government initiated the construction of the 750 MW Kafue Gorge Lower (KGL)
Hydroelectric Power Station in Southern part of the country along the Kafue River, 90km from Lusaka. The
project was commissioned in 2015 and considered to be the third largest hydropower station in the country,
funded through a Public – Private Partnership (PPP) model. UMCIL were the proud suppliers of around
8,000 metric tonnes of steel. The project was completed in 2020, with a total cost estimated to be around
$2 billion.
